Are you considering donating your eggs? If so, it helps to prepare as soon as possible so that you increase your chances of being approved as a donor. There are set criteria for egg donation that you’ll need to meet in order to be considered. Keep reading to learn more about the egg retrieval process and how you can prepare for it physically.
Age & Weight
Some of the top requirements for being an egg donor are age and weight. Potential egg donors must be between 21-29 years of age. If you fall within this age range, you’ve met the first of many requirements! Next, egg donors must have a BMI under 29. BMI is determined by your height and weight. If you’re unsure of your BMI, use this BMI calculator to determine your range. If your BMI is above 29, you will want to change your eating and lifestyle habits in order to lose weight. Following a wholesome diet and taking part in routine exercise boosts your overall health.
When it comes to your diet, you’ll want to focus on healthy options, such as:
- Organic foods
- Plenty of fruits and vegetables
- Complex carbohydrates (whole grain bread, brown rice, oats)
- Healthy fats such as nuts and oils
A healthy diet, combined with routine physical activity, will not only improve your overall health, it can alleviate stress and ensure you’re entirely prepared for the egg donation process.
Other requirements to become an egg donor include a variety of lifestyle changes. For example, you must have an overall clean bill of health. Your periods must be regular, and you must not have any reproductive abnormalities or disorders. If you’re a smoker or use any other type of drugs, you will not be eligible to donate eggs. If you have used recreational drugs anytime in the last 6 months to 2 years, you may not be eligible to be an egg donor as all donors go through drug screening as part of the requirements. Cigarette Smokers must not have smoked for a minimum of 6 months.
Aside from age, BMI, and overall health criteria, there are other requirements to be aware of. As a potential donor, you’ll need to commit to the process. Egg donation requires at least three months of your time and dedication. During these three months, you’ll need to commit to keeping yourself healthy and continue to meet all the criteria. Other “donating your eggs requirements” to be aware of include:
- Willing to take injectable medication
- Able to pass a psychological evaluation
- Willing to be available for quick turnaround communication
